Tipping on a Yacht Charter in Istanbul – What Is Usual?
Short answer: tipping is optional; if you were happy with the service, around 5–10% of the charter price is a common, generous gesture.

Guests from countries with different tipping cultures often ask us the same question at the end of a cruise: should we tip, and how much? In Turkey, a tip (bahşiş) is a thank-you for good service rather than an obligation. Here is what is usual on a private yacht on the Bosphorus.
Usual tip amounts
| Situation | Common tip |
|---|---|
| 2–3 hour private cruise, good service | 5–10% of the yacht price |
| Dinner or event cruise with extra effort (decoration, surprise, cake) | Around 10% |
| Small group on a short trip | A round amount, e.g. €20–50 for the crew |
| Not satisfied | Nothing – and please tell us why |
Example: on a 2-hour cruise at €700, a tip of €35–70 for the whole crew is typical. These are customs, not rules; any amount is appreciated.
How to give the tip
- Cash is easiest – Turkish lira or euros are both fine.
- Hand it to the captain at the end of the cruise; it is shared among the whole crew, including the chef and service staff.
- If you have no cash, you can tell us when settling the balance and we will pass it on.
What is already included in your price
At White Istanbul, the captain, crew and fuel are included in the hourly yacht price, and we never add a service charge or a hidden gratuity to the bill. Menus are priced per person and include unlimited soft drinks. You can see the full breakdown on our charter prices page.
Tipping elsewhere in Istanbul
- Restaurants: around 5–10% if service is not already included.
- Hotel porters and housekeeping: a small amount in lira.
- Taxis: rounding up the fare is common.
