One of the most searched questions before New Year's Eve is where to see the Istanbul New Year fireworks. The highlight of the night is the fireworks show at the Bosphorus Bridge at midnight, lighting up the bridge between Europe and Asia. Fireworks are also set off at other points along the shore by municipalities, hotels and venues – which is why the Bosphorus itself, where you can see both shores at once, is the best place to be at midnight.
The main show: Bosphorus Bridge fireworks
At midnight the Bosphorus Bridge (15 July Martyrs Bridge) becomes the centre of Istanbul's New Year celebrations. From the shore, the best spots are Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi – but they fill with crowds hours in advance. From the water you have an unobstructed, front-row view of the bridge and the fireworks above it.
Popular places to watch fireworks in Istanbul
- Ortaköy: the baroque Ortaköy Mosque and the Bosphorus Bridge make this the classic New Year's Eve setting. Expect very large crowds on the waterfront square.
- Sarayburnu (Fatih): the historic point below Topkapı Palace, where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara.
- Kadıköy: the squares and pier on the Asian side, with views back to the European skyline.
- Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue: the city's best-known street celebration – lively, but without a Bosphorus view.
- Üsküdar and the Asian shore: wide views across to the illuminated European side.
Why the water is the best seat in the city

From the middle of the Bosphorus you see both continents: the fireworks over the Bosphorus Bridge, the mosques of the old city, the palaces and the illuminated waterfront. Tips for watching the fireworks
- Arrive early at popular squares – access may be restricted and security checks are common.
- Dress warmly: midnight temperatures are usually around 5–10 °C.
- Have a plan to get home – public transport and taxis are very busy after midnight.
