Is a Bosphorus Yacht Cruise Worth It in Winter?
Short answer: yes – winter is the quietest, most atmospheric season on the Bosphorus, as long as you choose a yacht with a heated salon.
Last updated: November 2026
Most visitors picture the Bosphorus in summer, but a yacht cruise in Istanbul in winter has its own appeal: almost no traffic on the water, crisp air, the city lights switching on before dinner time and, on clear days, views across to the Princes' Islands. The difference from summer is that you spend more of the cruise inside – so the yacht you choose matters more than the date.
Istanbul winter weather at a glance
| Month | Typical daytime | Sunset (approx.) | Best cruise slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 8–12 °C | 16:35–16:45 | 15:00–17:00 or a dinner cruise |
| January | 6–10 °C | 16:45–17:15 | Midday or evening |
| February | 6–11 °C | 17:20–17:50 | Sunset cruise |
Temperatures are long-term averages; Istanbul winters bring a mix of sunny, rainy and occasionally snowy days. Our sunset times by month page has the full year.
Why winter can be better than summer
- Quiet water: far fewer tour boats, so the yacht can slow down in front of palaces and mansions.
- Early sunsets: you see golden hour and the illuminated bridges in a single two-hour cruise, finishing before dinner.
- Snow days: a snow-covered Bosphorus shore seen from a warm salon is one of Istanbul's most unforgettable sights.
- Better availability: popular evening slots that sell out in summer are easier to book.
What makes a winter cruise comfortable
Check that the yacht has a fully enclosed, heated salon with large windows – open-deck boats are cold from November to March. Our 2025-built yacht has an air-conditioned salon that heats in winter, seating for dinner indoors and three WCs, so guests can step out to the deck for photos and come back into the warmth. Hot tea and coffee are always complimentary.
What to wear
- A warm coat, scarf and hat for time on deck – the wind on the water feels colder than in the city.
- Flat shoes with non-slip soles; decks can be wet.
- Layers: inside the salon you will want to take your coat off.
Winter ideas
- Sunset and lights cruise – 2 hours from about 15:30 in December.
- Warm dinner cruise – 3 hours in the heated salon with a chef-prepared menu (private dinner cruise).
- Year-end company party – see corporate events.
- New Year's Eve – fireworks from the water (New Year's Eve packages).
What if the weather turns bad?
The Bosphorus is sheltered and most winter cruises run in light rain. Strong north-easterly winds (poyraz) occasionally make conditions unsuitable; in that case the captain decides, and the cruise is moved to another date. Current seasonal discounts are on our offers page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth doing a Bosphorus cruise in winter?
Yes. The water is quieter, sunsets come early so you see daylight and city lights in one cruise, and a yacht with a heated salon keeps you warm the whole time.
Is the yacht heated?
Yes. Our salon is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter, with indoor seating for dinner.
What time is sunset in Istanbul in December?
Around 16:35–16:45. For a sunset cruise, start about an hour earlier.
Are cruises cancelled because of weather in winter?
Only if the captain decides conditions are unsafe, usually because of strong north-easterly winds. The cruise is then rescheduled.
